Bird flu has regrettably reached Hungary, Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány announced on Wednesday after a briefing in Parliament on the situation with three dead swans testing positive for the H5NI virus in south Hungary earlier in the day. Gyurcsány asked the public to keep away from dead or ill birds and report them immediately on the government hotline set up for this purpose. The PM said there was no reason to worry or to ban poultry from our diet as bird flu was an epidemic threatening animals and, as far as known, risks for humans were minimal.
