Parliament passed co-governing party KDNP’s amendments to Hungary’s new constitution, online portal fn.hu reported.
According to the amendments, the Constitutional Court would get back its power in budget and tax issues if the state budget deficit falls below 50% of Hungarian GDP. Also, the Court would have 15 members instead of the current 11.
Only convicts committing intentional and violent crimes could be penalized by life imprisonment and, contrary to the suggestion of court leaders, the retirement age of judges would be the same as the regular retirement age.
Opposition parties MSzP and LMP did not attend the voting on the amendments, fn.hu said. The final voting on Hungary’s new constitution will be on April 18.
