The prime minister has appointed Fidesz MP Gabriella Selmeczi commissioner for pension protection, government spokesman Péter Szijjártó said on Saturday.
Selmeczi's task will be to harmonise activities that ensure the security of Hungarian pensions "and remove risks and dangers that threaten pensions and pensioners because of the crisis private pension funds are in," Szijjártó said.
Selmeczci was state secretary in charge of oversight of the social security system in 1998-1999, during the previous Fidesz government.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Wednesday said the government would suspend state payments to private pension funds to shore up the general government deficit. The respective bill was submitted to Parliament at the weekend. (MTI-Econews)
