Railway passenger numbers rise in Hungary for first time in a decade

Railway passenger numbers in Hungary are up for the first time in ten years, MAV-START told MTI on Monday.

Over 3.5m more passengers travelled by train in January-August compared to the same period a year earlier, said Zsolt Monszpart, CEO of the passenger unit of state-owned railway company MAV. The number of kilometers travelled was also up, at 160m, he added.

About 400,000 more passengers travelled with InterCity trains, with the biggest increases seen on the Budapest-Gyor-Hegyeshalom, the Budapest-Debrecen-Nyiregyhaza and the Budapest-Miskolc-Nyiregyhaza lines.
