Petition to resolve crisis after Malév grounding

Local officials from about thirty communities around Liszt Ferenc International Airport Budapest, along with their representatives in Parliament, have signed a declaration calling for measures to resolve a crisis resulting from jobs lost because of the grounding of national carrier Malév, airport operator Budapest Airport said on Thursday.

The declaration's signers said the airport generates billions of forints in tax revenue for both the state and local governments. They added that Budapest Airport indirectly provides for the livelihoods of more than 10,000 households, almost half of them nearby.

Malév's bankruptcy puts several thousand jobs and several hundred -- some local -- companies at risk.

Troubled Malév stopped commercial flights at the beginning of February.
