Hundreds of billions of forints, or up to 5% of Hungary's gross domestic product, are wasted each year due to traffic jams, according to recent estimates, daily Népszabadság reported on Wednesday.
Using an international calculation model, the paper estimated that around HUF 300 billion is wasted, much of it fuel burnt up in tailbacks. But if factors such as the impact on residents and businesses along busy roads are taken into account, costs rise to HUF 1,300-1,700 billion. The paper noted that it was difficult to estimate the damage to the environment or to human health in monetary terms.
