Hungarian wines will be classified in new categories conforming to European Union norms, Rural Development Minister Sándor Fazekas said at a press conference on Thursday.
Hungarian wines will be grouped into "protected designation of origin", "protected geographical designation of origin" and "without geographical designation of origin" categories, Fazekas said. Specifications for the first two categories have already been drawn up, he added.
Earlier, Hungarian wine categories were "quality", "protected designation of origin" and "local and table wine".
The Rural Development Ministry must submit the specifications for all of the categories to the European Commission by the end of 2011. The specifications are being prepared by National Wine Academy, under a contract the company won in a tender called by the Agrarmarketing Centrum. National Wine Academy is undertaking the project in cooperation with Hungary's 22 wine-growing regions.
