Hungarians spend annual HUF 1-1.5 bln on bird conservation

Between HUF 1 billion and HUF 1.5 billion is spent on bird conservation each year in Hungary, managing director of the Hungarian Association for Ornithology and Nature Conservation Gergő Halmos said at the opening of an international conference in Budapest on Thursday.

The Hungarian Association for Ornithology and Nature Conservation, with some 10,000 members, has a budget of HUF 400 million, Halmos said at the annual forum of BirdLife International, a global partnership of conservation organizations that strives to conserve birds, their habitats and biodiversity.

Hungary plays a leading role in the region in terms of bird conservation, and some of its practices, such as protecting predatory birds, have even been adopted by neighboring countries, he said. The association works to protect bird species and habitats, foster good relations between farmers and conservationists and involve people in nature and bird conservation, he added.
