The Hungarian hog farmers’ association (MSSz) organized a demonstration in front of Parliament to draw attention to the plight of members.
Between 50 and 60 farmers participated at the demonstration, with just as many journalists following the event.
MSSz chairman Antal Sakan said hog farmers had become loss-making because of higher feed prices and unfavorable economic conditions. The cost to farmers of raising hogs comes to HUF 370-380 per kilogram, while the farm gate price for the animals is just HUF 310-315 per kilogram, he explained.
If the government does not manage the situation in an appropriate manner, hog farming could go the way of Hungary's sugar beet industry, which is why the association is asking the farm ministry for working capital loans and feed purchased by the state, he said. The purchase of 100,000 tons of grain would cost the state about HUF 5 billion, he added.
