Budapest approves plan to buy new trams and trolleybuses

The City Council of Budapest unanimously approved a plan at a meeting on Wednesday to purchase 96 new trams and 93 new trolleybuses for the city by 2014 and a further 37 trams by 2016.

The project would cost a combined HUF 156.5 billion, of which 98% is to be financed from European Union funding, with only HUF 3 billion to be provided by the city.

The document put before the meeting said that only 40 of all the trams running in Budapest conform to up-to-date requirements.

The plan foresees a third phase, under which all trams and trolleybuses in the city would be replaced with low-floor ones by the year 2020.
