Medgyessy, Urbán tipped to follow Járai as central bank president

Péter Medgyessy, the former Prime Minister under the current coalition and László Urbán, a managing director at the National Bank of Hungary (MNB) are tipped as possible candidates for the post of NBH when the mandate of the current president Zsigmond Járai expires on March 1, 2007, the economic daily Napi Gazdaság said.

Medgyessy, a former banker, who was also Finance Minister under the previous Socialist-Liberal coalition, could be a candidate if the Socialist Party stays in power after the April general elections, the daily said citing rumours.

Urbán, a former Vice President at Citigroup who was candidate for the post of finance minister for the main opposition party Fidesz in 1998 could become a candidate if Fidesz wins and if Járai doesn't wish to go on.
