Shares of AngloGold Ashanti Ltd., the world's second-biggest gold producer, surged after the Sunday Times yesterday reported that OAO Polyus may buy the 41% stake held in the company by Anglo American Plc.
The Sunday Times of London didn't say where it got the information. Anglo American Plc and OAO Polyus declined to confirm or deny the story while Reuters reported an unidentified person close to Polyus as saying the article was inaccurate.
Shares of AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. rose 12.51 South African rand, or 3.7%, to 352.01 rand as of 9:21 a.m. Johannesburg time, after earlier climbing as much as 5.7%. Barrick Gold Corp. is the world's biggest gold producer. (Bloomberg)
