The Paks nuclear power plant's base is well suited for building one or two new blocks, Paks spokesman Istvan Mittler told MTI on Tuesday, when asked to comment on a statement by Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány that Parliament should make a decision in the first half of the year to double the capacity of Paks.
In the 80s, there were plans to build two more 1,000MW blocks at Paks, but the expansion was later shelved, Mittler said.
The state-owned Hungarian electricity works MVM aims to replace the country's lignite-fueled power plants with renewable energy resources or a nuclear power block or blocks in the mid-term, he added. (MTI – Econews)
