Mátrai Erőmű to launch Visonta power plant project

Mátrai Erőmű Zrt, the operator of Hungary’s largest coal-fired power plant, has approved a €750 million project that will create a new 400 MW unit in Visonta, northern Hungary.

The company is also planning to step up production at the coal mine of nearby Bükkábrány, President Jan Zilius of majority owner RWE Power AG announced. The contractor for the new power plant unit is likely to be selected before the end of 2006, however, implementation is contingent on whether Mátrai will receive sufficient emission credits under the national allocation plan between 2008 and 2012, according to the press release. The company has recently completed a Ft 16 billion upgrade, adding equipment to improve the performance and controllability of two existing gas turbines. (Világgazdaság)
