Economic research institute GKI expects gas prices to rise 15%-20% before the heating season starts this year, CEO Miklós Hegedűs said at an energy conference on Tuesday.
Hegedűs said the price rise, which is due to a global rise in fuel prices, would be as much as 60% without the government's implementation of a compensation system for subsidizing public utility gas use. Hegedűs said that the current "crazy" compensation system should be replaced by a system where only low-income families are subsidized. This could save the central budget Ft 100 billion, he added.
