Electricity consumption to peak on Wednesday

Hungary's transmission system operator Mavir expects electricity consumption to reach more than 5,900MW on Wednesday, a peak for the year, as people turn up the air conditioning because of a heat wave, but there is still sufficient power supply, Mavir spokeswoman Krisztina Kovács told MTI on Wednesday.

For every degree Celsius the temperature rises, electricity consumption increases 60-70MW, but the heat wave poses no threat to electricity supply as Mavir currently has double the required reserve capacity of 1,350MW, Kovács said. Electricity consumption in the country has dropped 6-7% this summer because of the economic crisis, she added. (MTI-ECONEWS)
