Bulgaria's leading fertilizer producers, Neochim and Agropolychim, halted production on Tuesday after supplies of Russian natural gas to Bulgaria were suspended, the companies said.
“We have started to close down production units after the gas supplies to the company were stopped,” Neochim, which uses gas in its production process, said in a statement. Agropolychim, majority owned by US Acid & Fertilizer, said it had shut down production after Bulgarian state gas monopoly Bulgargaz stopped gas deliveries to the plant.
All supplies of Russian gas delivered through Ukraine to Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece and Macedonia were halted early on Tuesday as a result of a price dispute between Moscow and Kiev. Bulgargaz told industrial users to switch to alternative fuels such as oil, and the government urged households to start using other means for heating rather than central heating that runs on gas.
