The average number of unemployed was 323,600 in the first quarter 2006, resulting in an unemployment rate of 7.7%, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) reported on Thursday.
The unemployment rate slipped from 7.8% in the previous three-month period and rose from 7.1% in the first three months 2005. KSH calculates the jobless rate in line with ILO standards.
Hungary's harmonized unemployment rate in February was 7.9%, under the respective EU average of 8.8% and the EU-15's rate of 8%. The number of employed averaged 3.88 million in January-March 2006, up 2,400 from the previous three months period and up 14,700 compared to the same period a year earlier. The number of unemployed in the period was down 2.900 from between December 2005 and February 2006 and rose 26,200 from the same period a year earlier.
In the period, 19.3% of the unemployed were between 15 and 24 years of age. The unemployment rate in this age group was 19% in the period.
