Teachers' warning strike affects 15,000 employees

More than 15,000 employees in 500 educational institutions at 300 towns and villages throughout Hungary have been affected by teachers' two-hour warning strike Friday morning, the chairman of the Democratic Trade Union of Teachers said.

A more significant and longer strike may be announced early next year if the union does not receive guarantee that the minister of education and culture will fulfill his promises on public education, Gábor Kerpen said.
The union wants guarantees that teachers will not be laid off and that fewer teachers will not have to do more work for less money. In a statement issued on Monday, the Ministry of Education and Culture indicated its readiness to continue negotiations, now going on for several months, with all relevant trade unions.
