The European Commission has approved requests by Hungary, Spain and Slovakia to pay subsidies to sugar beat farmers hard hit by the EU's sugar reforms, Spanish news agency EFE reported on Friday.
MTI was unable to confirm the report with EU officials.
The Commission said Hungary could grant subsidies up to €39.6 million to its struggling sugar beat farmers, EFE said.
Hungary's Agriculture Ministry recently said HUF 10 billion would be available to sugar beat farmers within the framework of a “diversification” program. The support was to come from rural development funding. (MTI-ECONEWS)
