Russia may halt poultry imports from Michigan

Russia, the world's largest buyer of chicken from abroad, may halt poultry imports from the US state of Michigan, where a swan infected with avian influenza was discovered last week, Interfax reported, citing Russia's Federal Veterinary Service. The service will tighten controls over US poultry supplies while it waits for an official report from the US, the news service said, citing an interview with Alexei Alexeyenko, the veterinary service's press secretary, in Moscow. Two Michigan birds found to be infected with avian influenza don't have the lethal form that is spreading elsewhere in the world, US officials said Aug. 14. (Bloomberg)
