Rural development minister orders national food inspection

Rural Development Minister Sándor Fazekas on Thursday ordered a comprehensive nationwide food inspection aimed primarily at uncovering products containing Genetically Modified Organisms, the ministry said in a statement.

Fazekas said that the Central Agricultural Office would oversee the strict inspection of food at warehouses and grocery stores in Hungary, adding that the office would take resolute action to eliminate any uncovered irregularities.

The Rural Development Ministry's statement noted that European Union regulations do not ban food containing GMOs, though do stipulate that GMO content must be clearly displayed on food labels.
GMO seeds are banned in Hungary.
