Retail sales inch up 0.3 % in September

Retail sales in Hungary inched up 0.3% in September from a year earlier, according to data adjusted for calendar effects, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) said on Thursday.

The second year-on-year rise followed an increase of 0.4% in August and a 1.3% fall in July.

Retail sales volume stagnated on the month in September adjusted for both calendar and seasonal effects, after rising 0.4% in August which followed monthly drops in July and June.

Without adjustment retail sales fetched HUF 689.5bn at current prices in September after HUF 709.6bn in August which was this year’s high.

Third quarter retail sales were down 0.2% from a year earlier, following the same drop in the second quarter and stagnating volumes in the first.

January-September retail sales were down 0.1% from a year earlier.

Food, beverages and tobacco sales grew 1.5% in September adjusted for calendar effects from a year earlier after increasing 0.4 % in August, and were up 0.2% yr/yr in January-September.

Non-food products’ turnover dropped 0.6% yr/yr in September after increasing 2.5% in August, and was up 0.3% in January-September from a year earlier.
