Restructuring, job cuts at Defence Ministry to save billions

A restructuring, including a 30% reduction in headcount, at Hungary’s Defence Ministry is expected to save several billion forints a year, Defence Minister Csaba Hende said in an interview published in Wednesday’s issue of daily Magyar Nemzet.

The job cuts did not affect troops, Mr Hende said. The ministry wants to strengthen the troops and cut staff rather in bureaucratic areas, he added.

The restructuring and jobs cut were completed in the middle of November.

Mr Hende said he wanted to see Hungary’s Army reserves rise for more than 2,000 at present to 8,000. The increase could be supported by the return to reserve duty of soldiers who took early retirement, he added.
