Births and deaths rose last year and Hungary's population loss increased compared to 2004, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) said on Monday.
The number of newborns was up 2.5 % to 97,500 and births were up every month year-on-year except in July and December. Deaths rose by 2.3 % to 135,000, and were especially numerous in spring 2005. Still, the number of deaths in 2005 (3,000) outstripped the rise in births (2,400).
The population numbered 10,077,000 at the end of the year. As for the number of marriages there was a slight increase: 44,100, up by 0.7% in 2005 compared to a year before. The infant live birth rate improved. For every 1,000 live births in 2005 there were 6.3 stillbirths -- a decline of 5% year-on-year.
