Hungary's population decline slowed in the first three months of 2006, as the number of deaths fell more significantly than that of births compared to the same period of 2005, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) reported on Monday. Hungary's population stood at 10,074,000 at the end of March.
In the surveyed Jan-March period, 23,951 babies were born, and there were 33,763 deaths and 5,500 marriages. The number of newborns fell 0.4% in Jan-March period year-on-year while the mortality rate was down 9.3%.
The trend over the last few years has been for the number of marriages to bottom out in the first months of the year. However, there were more marriages in March this year than in the same month of last year, but the percentage of marriages in Q1 remained the same year-on-year, the office said.
