The rate of population decline slowed in the first two months of the year as both the number of births and deaths fell compared to the same period a year ago, the Central Statistic Office (KSH) said on Monday.
Hungary's population was estimated at 10,074,000 at the end of February, and fell 3.9 per thousand in the first two months this year compared to a decline of 4.4 per thousand in 2005. In the first two months, 15,615 babies were born, there were 21,950 deaths and 3,000 marriages. The number of newborns fell 1.3% year-on-year while deaths were down 4.7%. The trend over the last few years has been for the number of marriages to bottom out in the first two months. This year marriages were even lower, down 2.1% year-on-year, the KSH said.
