The National Bank of Hungary (MNB) has lost a foreign currency deposit of €19 million recently, daily Népszava said. Russian International Bank for Economic Cooperation - former bank of COMECON-settlements - deposited the sum automatically every month, and the Hungarian central bank paid back interest monthly as well. On Dec 29 of last year the whole monthly sum, not just the interest, was transferred to the Russian bank on accident because of 'technical failure', unnamed sources say. However, the Russian bank regards the deposit as expired and is not willing to transfer the money back again. The central bank did not comment on the mistake.
