Italian EU Affairs Minister Andrea Ronchi said the government's aid package to help its car industry was not protectionist and was fully in line with European Union rules.
Ronchi was responding to comments from the European Commission that the $1.7 billion package may violate EU rules on state aid and that it would seek further details from Italy.
“It's not in the slightest bit discriminatory but is perfectly in line with the EU,” Ronchi told reporters.
“We defend national interests but in line with the indications from Europe, there is no doubt about that.” (Reuters)
