Hungary's 2009 cereals harvest down 17.8%

Hungarian farmers harvested 11.9 million tons of cereals in 2009, down 17.8% from 14.5 million tons in 2008, according to preliminary Central Statistical Office (KSH) data published on Tuesday.

Farmers grew cereals on 2.3 million hectares of land in 2009, almost unchanged from 2008.

The amount of wheat harvested in Hungary declined 21.9pc yr/yr in 2009 to 4.4 million tons, while that of maize dropped by 15.2% to 7.5 million tons.

The amount of sugar beets harvested in Hungary increased 20.1% yr/yr in 2009 to 692,000 tons. (MTI-Econews)
