The goal of a 2009-2013 action plan formulated by the government is to transform Hungary into the logistics hub of the central and eastern European region by 2013, National Development and Economy Ministry state secretary Zoltán Mester said.
Mester said there is HUF 73.5 billion (€261.77 million) in EU and domestic budget funding available for logistics developments between 2007 and 2013. Mester said Hungary ranks third on the list of European countries with the best conditions for setting up logistics centers behind Belgium and the Netherlands.
The goal is to have the logistics sector contribute to the Hungary's GDP at a western European level of 6%-6.5% by 2013. Hungary's logistics sector currently contributes 5% of GDP. Ministry figures show that there are 30,000 logistics businesses in Hungary, 99% of which are SMEs, while there are 160,000 people employed in the logistics sector in Hungary.
Logistics companies generated revenue of HUF 2,626 billion in 2007. (MTI - Econews)
