Hungary jobless rate reaches 10.9% in April-June

The average unemployment rate in Hungary was 10.9% in the 15-74 age group in April-June, down from 11.2% in March-May and just a hair over the 10.8% in the same period a year earlier, data published by the Central Statistics Office (KSH) on Tuesday show.

In absolute terms, the number of unemployed averaged 472,200 in April-June.

The unemployment rate in the 25-54 age group was 10.0% in April-June, down from 10.5% in March-May and slightly under the 10.1% rate in the same period a year earlier. There were 346,300 unemployed in the age group during the period.

The unemployment rate in the 15-24 age group was 27.9% in April-June. There were 80,000 unemployed in the age group.

Of the total unemployed in the 15-74 age group, about 57% were out of work because they lost their job and about 9% were unemployed because the public work scheme they were participating in had ended. A little more than 13% of the unemployed said they had never had regular work.

KSH said that 46.8% of the unemployed had been looking for work for a year or more. The average time the unemployed spent seeking jobs was 18.3 months.

KSH noted that data from the State Employment Service (ÁFSz) show there were 524,000 registered job seekers at the end of June, down 5.2% from a year earlier.

The number of employed in Hungary in the 15-74 age group rose to 3,876,200 in April-June from 3,808,800 in the same period a year earlier. The rate of employment in the group climbed to 50.6% from 49.6% during the period.

The employment rate in the 20-64 age group was 62.1% in April-June. The number of employed in the group reached 3,831,100 during the period.
