Hungary’s farm sector has benefited greatly from the country’s EU membership: the sector’s profits rose to HUF 74-76 billion (about $340-352 million) in 2008 from HUF 45-50 billion in 2004, Agriculture Minister József Gráf said on Thursday, a day before the fifth anniversary of Hungary’s EU accession.
Hungary’s farm sector exports reached a record €5.7 billion in 2008, Gráf said. Imports reached €3.8 billion to give the sector a trade surplus of €1.9 billion, he added. The amount of funding available to support the sector has grown from an annual HUF 200 billion to HUF 440-450 billion, Gráf said. (MTI-Econews)
