Hungarian farm gate prices drop 5.7% yr/yr in April

Farm gate prices in Hungary fell 5.7% yr/yr in April after falling 4.1% in the previous month. Crop prices dropped 6.0% and livestock and animal product prices were down 5.3% from April 2009, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) reported on Tuesday.

Farm gate prices rose yr/yr in January and February after 16 months of decline. Crop prices declined again yr/yr in March and April after rising in the previous three months. Livestock and animal product prices have declined steadily yr/yr starting January 2009.

Farm gate prices in the first four months were down 0.2% from a year earlier as crop prices rose 1.2% and livestock and animal product prices fell 2.6% in the period.

Farm gate prices fell 9.5% in 2009 as crop prices fell 12.7% and livestock and animal product prices fell 4.6% from 2008.

Farm gate prices of cereal crops were down 7.8% yr/yr in April 2010. The farm gate price of maize reached HUF 30.0/kg after rising slightly for four months, exceeding by 4.2% its level in April 2009. The farm gate price of wheat fell 14.8% at the same time to HUF 28.2/kg, dropping below the price of maize. The price of wheat also fell slightly from January 2010, when it was still HUF 29.0/kg.

Farm gate prices of live animals fell 9.5% yr/yr in April, with prices of live hogs dropping a steep 17.0%. The price of live cattle and poultry fell 4.7% and 3% in twelve months, respectively. The price of live hogs fell to HUF 271/kg from its peak of HUF 340/kg in July last year.

Farm gate prices of animal products were up, in contract, by 5.7% in April, with the price of eggs down 2.3% and the price of milk up 11.0%. The farm gate price of milk has been rising steadily since July 2009, increasing to HUF 69.5/litre from HUF 56.4/litre. (MTI-ECONEWS)
