Guest nights down 3.4% yr/yr in January-September

Hungarian and foreign tourists spent 15.557 million guest nights at commercial lodgings in Hungary in the first nine months of 2006, 3.4% fewer than in the same period a year earlier, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) reported on Friday.

The number of foreign guest nights fell 8.3% from a year earlier to 8.102 million while domestic guest nights rose 2.6% to 7.455 million in January-September 2006. Guest nights at hotels fell 0.9% year-on-year to 10.577 million in the first nine months, of which foreign guest nights fell 7.4% to 6.238 million while guest nights spent by Hungarians in hotels rose a sharp 10.0% to 4.339 million. The average occupancy rate of hotels in January-September was 49.5%, unchanged from the same period a year earlier.

Gross revenue of commercial lodgings was Ft 175.688 billion (€673.2 million) in January-September, a 5.3% increase at current prices from the same period a year earlier. The increase partly reflected a weakening of the forint in the period, KSH noted. Room fees accounted for 57.5% of total revenue during the period, catering accounted for 23.3% and other services for the rest. Room fees and prices for catering rose 4.3% year-on-year, including a 5.5% rise in room rates and a 4.3% rise in the price of catering services. (Mti-Eco)
