The government has initiated an amendment to the Penal Code in order to make abuse of public funds punishable, government spokesperson Anna Nagy said after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
Nagy said budgetary fraud as a new concept is to be added to the Penal Code. Under the amendment, offenders abusing public funds to a value of more than HUF 100,000 will be punishable with imprisonment between 2-10 years.
Budgetary fraud includes tax fraud, fraud relating to employment, smuggling, VAT fraud and excise duty fraud among others, she said.
Abuse of social security, social or other welfare allowances such as disability pension or sickness benefit will also become punishable, with up to 2 years' imprisonment, above a value of HUF 20,000.
