Gov't aims to create conditions for eurozone accession

Hungary's current government has intentionally not mentioned a possible date for Hungary's accession to the eurozone as its goal has been to put the country in a macroeconomic situation where it can meet the criteria for adopting the single currency as early as possible, Finance Minister Péter Oszkó said in response to a question at an event in Budapest on Thursday.

JP Morgan recently said Hungary is expected to be the next country in Central Europe to adopt the euro, Oszkó noted.

Steps the government has taken as well as planned measures to narrow the deficit will come with growth sacrifices in the short term, but will put Hungary on the path of sustainable growth in the long term, Oszkó said. (MTI-ECONEWS)
