France’s state secretary in charge of EU affairs Bruno Le Maire travels to Budapest on Thursday to discuss with what conditions the timetable for joining the euro zone could be shortened, French news broadcaster France 24 reported on Thursday.
“We will look at with what conditions countries that are not yet in the euro zone could join with an accelerated timetable,” Le Maire told France 24. “France will show its solidarity with the central-eastern European country....Nothing would be more tragic for Europe than a new East-West division,” he added.
Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány urged EU leaders to shorten the period member states must remain in the ERM-2, the anteroom for the euro zone, at an informal summit in Brussels on Sunday. (MTI-Econews)
