The number of personal income tax returns filed in Hungary reached 4,300,000 last year, down 240,000 from just three years earlier, business daily Napi Gazdaság said on Friday, citing data from the National Tax and Customs Office (NAV).
The paper suggested the drop could be partly the result of a return by people to the grey economy after an earlier crackdown on tax evasion. The average earned income for work declared in the returns was HUF 1.9 million in 2011, just HUF 3,000 more than in 2008, showing a clear drop in income adjusted for inflation, the paper said.
