The Hungarian Chamber of Agriculture on Thursday asked Rural Development Minister Sándor Fazekas to declare either all or parts of Hungary a disaster area because of flooding.
The declaration would give farmers protection from business partners that seek compensation. The chamber asked the government to allocate HUF 20 billion in revenue from the planned extraordinary tax on banks for the Disaster Relief Fund. The extraordinary tax is expected to generate revenue of HUF 187 billion in 2010. The chamber also asked the government to intervene with banks on the rescheduling of loan repayments for farmers. Recent flooding has caused farmers in Hungary an estimated HUF 100 billion. (MTI-Econews)
