The European Union's executive arm expressed concern that Italy's plan to help its car sector may violate EU rules on state aid.
“As far as the Italian plan is concerned, we do have some concerns,” European Commission spokesman Jonathan Todd told a regular briefing.
He said the Commission, which has the power to block illegal state aid in the 27-nation bloc, would ask Italy for details of the plan to assess whether it could be approved.
Todd said Italy had made its aid dependent on car makers signing a special protocol, possibly discriminating against manufacturers that do not sign it. (Reuters)
