ECB launches probe into MNB dispute

The European Commission has opened an inquiry into the Hungarian government's recent amendment of the country's Central Bank Act, which slashed the salaries of the leaders of the National Bank of Hungary (MNB), daily Népszabadság reported.

This investigation comes after Hungary sought the European Central Bank's (ECB) legal opinion on the amendment in an accelerated procedure, not leaving sufficient time for the international organization to discuss the matter with other European central banks. The European Commission is now looking to establish whether the amendment is in line with EU law, the paper said, without citing a source. (BBJ)
