CPI up 2.8% yr/yr in May

Consumer prices rose by 2.8% year on year in May, up from 2.3% in April, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) announced on Tuesday.

Inflation was 3.6% in May 2005.
The month-on-month increase came to 1% versus a 0.7% rise in April 0.6% in May last year.
Consumer prices climbed 2.5% in January-May from the same period of 2005.
Core inflation was 1% year-on-year in May, compared to 0.8% year-on-year in April and was up 0.4% in monthly terms.
Food prices jumped 2.5% in monthly terms, against a 0.9% rise in April. In annual terms they were up 5.8% against a rise of 5.3% in the previous month.
The price of consumer durables did not change from April and dropped 4.6% from May 2005.
The price of electricity, gas and other fuels was unchanged in May from April and was down 0.2% from May 2005, compared with a 0.2% year-on-year drop in April and 6.4% surge in May last year.
The price of services increased by 0.3% and 3.2% in monthly and annual terms, respectively.
