Conference tourism has undergone a sharp slowdown in Hungary. There were 118 international conferences in the country during the first half of 2009, 51% less than in H1 of last year, conference-tourism company Magyar Kongresszusi Iroda said on Monday.
The steepest drop was in February, when there were 78% fewer international meetings compared to February of 2008.
The most popular destination for conference tourism was Budapest, where 82.6% of all international conferences in Hungary were held in the first half of the year. Hotels were the most popular venue for such tourism, hosting almost 80% of all conferences, while conference centers built specifically for this purpose, fewer in number though much larger, were the second most popular venue, hosting just more than 10% of all conferences.
