Budapest mayor Gábor Demszky paid an official visit to China where he met with Guo Jinlong, his colleague in Beijing.
Demszky said Beijing reported collecting €1 billion almost instantaneously from sponsorship, media broadcasts and ticket sales for the 2008 Olympics, which is why Guo Jinlong considered it natural for cities bidding to host the event to link their respective infrastructural upgrade projects with the Olympics itself.
Demszky said Budapest’s application for the 2020 summer games could be one of the best drivers for development in the city and being approved larger amounts of EU funding.
He added that the city’s cabinet is now committed to preparing the stage for the next national government and the next management of Budapest to consider the issue and make a grounded decision in 2011. (Napi Gazdaság)
