Budapest Airport (BA) has a direct and significant positive impact on economic growth and this effect is in direct relation to the growing number of passengers, according to a study by the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at the University of Szeged (S Hungary), business daily Napi Gazdaság said on Friday.
BA made a significant contribution to increasing Hungary's GDP, the survey said. In 2009, a total of 9,000 employees generated net revenue of HUF 341 billion, increasing GDP by HUF 73 billion. Companies at the airport terminals made purchases of HUF 52 billion, about HUF 26 billion of those were of Hungarian origin.
The survey estimates that 1 million new passengers at the airport results in 1,340 new workplaces and a HUF 13 billion contribution to GDP.
Budapest Airport handled more than 776,704 passengers in May, seeing its busiest month of May ever, the company announced earlier.
The first five months of 2011 generated 3,163,412 passengers, another all-time record. The airport saw an increase of 8.3% in passenger traffic over May 2010 and an increase of 13.1% compared to the same period last year.
These results follow hard on the heels of strong first quarter results that were well ahead of both the EU average and Budapest’s peer airports within the central and eastern Europe region.
Passenger numbers at Budapest Airport rose 1.2% to 8.19 million in 2010, after falling 4.2% in 2009.
