In the current situation, all players have to take responsibility for helping Eastern European banks, even the countries of their Western parent banks, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said at a press conference in Brussels with Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány on Tuesday.
All players must take responsibility, the new and the old member states, financial institutions and financial market authorities, as well as the countries of parent banks, Barroso said. We are speaking about a challenge that the EU has never experienced before, and it requires a closer cooperation between member states.
The issue will be discussed at a meeting of Eastern European country leaders in Brussels on Sunday, prior to an extraordinary summit of EU government heads, he added. (MTI-Eco)
