Hungary's autumn barley harvest could reach 600,000 tons this year, Rural Development Ministry state secretary György Czerván said at a press conference on Friday.
Farmers in the south of Hungary have already harvested autumn barley on 2,000 of about 165,000 hectares, Czerván said. Average yield for the crop is expected to be 3.8 tons a hectare, he added.
Farmers have also started harvesting autumn wheat and experts put the average yield around 4 tons a hectare for this year's crop, he said. Thus farmers could harvest 3.9 million tons of wheat this year, he added.
Last year's wheat crop was 3.76 million tons, down 10% from the average harvest in 2006-2010.
