2006 cereals harvest down 9.9% from previous year

Hungarian farmers harvested 14.601m tons of cereals in 2006, 9.9% less than a year earlier, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) reported on Friday.

Farmers grew cereals on 2.837 million hectares in 2006, a 3.3% smaller area than in 2005. Average yield was 4.06 tons per hectare, 9.8% less than in 2005.
Farmers harvested 8.441 million tons of maize from 1.229 million hectares in 2006, a 2.6% larger area than in 2005. Average yield was 6.87 tons per hectare. The harvest was 6.7% smaller than in 2005.
Farmers harvested 2.548 million tons of sugar beet from 50,000 hectares in 2006, a 19.4% smaller area than in 2005. The harvest was 27.5% smaller than in 2005. Average yield fell 11% to 50.76 tons per hectare.
Farmers harvested 574,000 tons of potatoes on 23,000 hectares in 2006, an 8% smaller area than in the previous year. The harvest was down 12.6%. Average yield rose 10.5% to 25.44 tons per hectare.
Only the sunflower and rapeseed harvest grew in 2006.
