An accident occurred in western Hungary at the Ajkai Timfoldgyar Zrt plant, owned by MAL Zrt, when the dam of a sludge reservoir at a big alumina factory burst, flooding parts of three villages.
The National Disaster Unit told MTI that seven people were missing and ambulance staff had treated 120 injured, with more than 70 taken to hospital.
György Bakos, a county disaster-control spokesman, says about 600,000 to 700,000 cubic meters of sludge, which is reported to have high levels of harmful chemicals spilled from the reservoir.
At least two people were killed in the incident. The death toll rose to three by Tuesday morning.
Police have launched criminal investigations about why the dam burst. (BBJ)
